Putin's purported strategy has produced the exact opposite result than the one it was intended to produce. NATO and the US did not really have a presence in the Ukraine, now the west is pouring in military forces in response to the russian threat. Putin has managed to turn a non issue for the west into a point of principle. How can Putin expect the west to believe that his intention is not to invade Ukraine, when, at great expense, he masses his military forces on the border. Are we to believe that he has a policy of a pre reactive response, reacting to a NATO threat that has not happened yet. His call for NATO to withdraw from Eastern Europe is just to give his forces a clear run to require the old USSR satellite states through a russian invasion.
