Billie Piper's Teeth not according to the EU. The problem is that the only way reunification can happen is if the NI people vote for it. The protocol, is an attempt to engineer conditions that will influence any vote towards reunification. The problem is the Irish politics are dominated by militant minorities, willing to impose their will at the end of a gun. That is why the protocol has put the border in the Irish sea. It was thought that there was less chance of loyalist violence than republican. That may have been erroneous.

The protocol is imposdible to implement, it will result in the violence that it was intended to stop.

Billie Piper's Teeth because it is designed to enhance the chance of reunification, by forcing trade towards the republic and the EU, while still expecting the UK to fund NI. The loyalists will rightly see it for what it is. If the empty shelves continue in NI, with trade to the rest of the UK restricted, then there is a good chance of loyalist violence.

Billie Piper's Teeth isn't that the way of Irish politics, the IRA terrorists tried to force reunification for years, without success. I am all for reunification, let the EU pay the £13 billion per annum it takes to keep NI going? The rest of the UK economy could do with the money, and any terrorist problem would belong to the EU, the rest of the UK would be free of the problem.

Billie Piper's Teeth the UK voted to leave the EU, based on the most democratic method, a single issue referendum with every vote counting. It would be undemocratic for the Asus to be decided on the unique problems of NI. That would be the tail wagging the dog.

Billie Piper's Teeth I doubt if they will accept either, as is evident by the death threats being made to EU customs officers operating at the NI ports.

@drakehound2244 interestingly the us planned to fight its nuclear war with russian in Europe, turning Germany into nuclear ash. They even planted nuclear landmines across Europe to stop the russian tank advance.

@trishameenaghan8009 the EU is discovering that a border in the North sea will not work any better than one between the republic and the north. Both are likely to result in violence.

You mean that Ireland becomes a vassal state of the EU. The last thing the republic or the EU wants is the liability of NI. It wants that to remain with the UK. Reunification, would bring a significant windfall to the economy of the rest of the UK. The EU would be forced to take on the £13 billion per year cost of running NI, and inherit a disenfranchised, disenchanted and potentially militant loyalist population. Would the EU be willing to send peace keeping troops to the Ireland? How long before they would be seen as an occupation force?

@burnzyj7100 i doubt if the republic would really want NI back. Reunification is an ideal, best left to tomorrow, or the day after, or much later. In practice they won't want the liabilities. As I have already said, the loyalist will be the disenfranchise minority, that may well revive violence. If the nationalists we're confident of winning a reunification referendum, then it would have happened already. The EU would much rather keep the status quo, as it keeps the rest of the UK on the hook.
