Macron wants to link the rebuilding of the cathedral to rebuilding his political career. One question worth asking is why the French government did not invest in the renovation work, before most of it was burned down. The answer is simple, it was less symbolic repairing a slowly crumbling building, far better to be associated with the resurrection of a phoenix from the ashes, much more dramatic, much more photogenic, far positive symbolically. The only problem is there will be no replacing what has been turned to ash. Macron wants the love and positive feeling towards the cathedral to rub off on him. Don't be fooled, he is the same eurocrate he was before the fire.
