A delay without reason is pointless. The only advantage of having a delay without the EU removing the backstop is that it gives more time to prepare for a no deal brexit. The Republic of Ireland is in denial about a UK brexit which will result in no backstop being in place. There is near zero chance that the UK will ratify an agreement that contains the backstop.

@undogmatisch5873 they really have no choice, given the existing deal will not be ratified by the UK parliament. A no deal brexit will force the EU to negotiate a trade deal with the UK or have an open border. This is the path that should have been taken three years ago. What cannot happen is the the UK is forced to remain in the EU customs union, taking rules and directives from the EU. They must be more creative than simply bullying the UK into following EU rules.

@xornxenophon3652 the DUP will not allow the customs border in the Irish sea, since it treats NI different to the rUK and puts the EU in charge of NI. No one wants Irish reunification. The RoI and the EU know that NI is a financial and political burden that they do not want. The most likely out come at the moment is a no deal brexit, without any backstop. The French are likely veto from any delay in brexit, unless it is to run a second referendum.
