I suspect you are wrong. The last thing the EU or the Republic of Ireland wants is the financial and political liability of Northern Ireland. It would be a phyrric victory, as it would give the rest of the UK a significant windfall and free it completely from EU control. Analysis by the Irish freedom party has shown that the customs border checks would have been far better placed between Ireland and the rest of the EU. This would have been better for Irish trade, for its economy and for preserving the GFA . But this was never about want is best for Ireland, it was about EU ideology and punishing the UK for having the temerity to leave the EU. The EU most engineer brexit so it is seen to fail, if it is to stop others from questioning the merits of membership.

@Earhairy but that is likely what they will get. Reunification, particularly if forced by the EU. Will solve all the problems for the rest of the UK. The EU and the Republic will be required to find the £11billion support for NI. It will also inherit a very angry loyalists population. The rest of the UK will lose the financial liability, the GFA and an unworkable border, freeing it from EU blackmail. The only down side is the presidents it sets for Scotland, but Scotland is another problem. Would the EU be willing to allow an independent Scotland join, when it too represents a liability, that would create yet another land border. The liability being amplified by the new land border, that would cut Scotland off from its biggest trading partner.

@jaymcaaa which Irish? Not those in NI, they have the best of both worlds. Not the Republic, as they like the idea of reunification, so long as it does not happen any time soon. The idea that the IRA can persuade the northern Irish to vote for reunification by shooting them, or blowing them up, has been tried and failed. Exploding bombs in NI will certainly put off the EU. Exploding bombs in the UK is also pointless, as they have no say in the matter. The idea they will shoot members of the Irish freedom party seems counter productive, unless the intention is for Ireland to be ruled by Brussels.

@chardonnay5767 the northern Irish are not going to vote to join the republic, as this means joining the EU. At the moment they get the best of both worlds, £11 billion support cash from Westminster and not paying into the EU. Reunification will take both of those away. If that were not the case, the Republic would be pressing for a referendum. If asked, they want one, but not any time soon. The EU certainly will not want to lose the blackmail advantage it has over the UK any time soon.

@jaymcaaa you really do not understand the process do you. The UK government has no control over Irish reunification votes, they are controlled by the people of NI. That said, I doubt if there is much of an appetite for holding such a vote. I suppose the UK government might force the issue by reducing its support for NI. It is the DUP in Westminster that is supporting the internal markets bill in the commons. They united as a block to vote for it. The Irish nationalists have decided not to be represented in the UK parliament, so they are in no position to force a reunification vote. The Irish freedom party is pro reunification, but anti EU. I strongly suggest you watch a few of their YouTube broadcasts before commenting on them. Sinn Fein was very anti EU, until it realised that it could benefit from money coming from the EU, now it appears to be happy to accept rule by Brussels, while still hanging on to the myth of Irish independence.
