  2. Declan Flanagan don't be so naive, the German share a common currency with Italy, they all do whatever it takes to protect it. While in the euro zone, the Italian debt is guaranteed by the European monetary fund and the Central Bank. They will continue to by Italian government bonds as that protects the value of the euro, but just like Greece they will exact a heavy penalty from Italy to get their money back. There is no such thing as a free lunch in the euro zone. The German solution will be swingeing austerity and the sale of Italian assets. Though this will not happen until the next Italian election and the European elections. They will not want he Italian population ding anything to stop the financial measures. Until then the EU will continue to deny any involvement in Italian politics and offer warm word of solidarity and support. If I am wrong, you can tell me so in about a year's time.
