Governments would like to blame consumers for treating the seas as a toxic wastebin, but it is governments who have been negligent in the way they have disposed of plastic waste and tardy in there willingness to legislate against industry that produces it. Environmental aware consumers are separating their plastic waste for recycling, not going down to the coast to throw it in the sea. This plastic pollution tragedy is the result of municipal irresponsible waste disposal. Not only must no more plastic but put into our seas and oceans, what is already there must be removed before it kills all the wild life. No doubt future archaeologist will see the 21st century extinction event marked by a thick black gooey layer of polymerised hydrocarbons in the sedimentary record.
