@Durgesuth given the debt spiral the UK will be in if it remains, the last thing the EU will want is the UK in the euro zone. It would almost inevitable lead to the destruction of the euro zone making the Italian debt problem look like misplaced small change. The EU will try and close the article 50 escape route, to stop any others trying to leave. As it is, if the UK is forced to remain inside the EU, it will be extremely destructive. There are 17.4 million citizens in be UK who have now developed a real hatred for the organisation and all it represents. They will be dedicated to voting for the most Eurosceptic government and MEPs, the remain votes will just go back to sleep.

@Durgesuth catastrophe theory suggests that when a system is unstable, even minor external events can force it into a new stable state. The UK leaving the EU is not a small event and given the global economic conditions, I do not think it will take much to collapse the whole house of cards. One of the features of such instability, is that it will appear to be stable until the moment it changes state, it is just that it is running out of margins of control. In this respect it is very much like other big systems that are maintained in a particular state by feed back mechanisms, it's a bit like climate. It could be said that we are heading for the perfect financial storm. If the UK leaves without a deal, we are likely to see a cascade failure of the EU economy.

@Durgesuth I disagree that we should reduce tariffs. We either need tariffs or very strong UK standards to protect the UK internal market and its manufactures/produces. Low tariffs should only be applied to raw materials and products that we can never produce for our selves. The UK producers must be encouraged to fill the gap in imports. It is the only way to turn the UK from a nation of consumers to one of producers. Higher internal standards will protect the UK from importing rubbish from the US and China. I do not want brexit to be used as a excuse to import GM and other poor quality food from the US. The UK must strengthen rules on food labels, makeing clear the country of origin. We can still import food that meets our high standards. I do agree that it will be difficult to change the EU from the inside, we have had forty years to do so and have failed, however. It must be remembered that until now, our government has been complicit in the EU project, probably because it benefited a very influential super rich few. Now the EU has been revealed as the parasitic mister it is, and we have a substantial part of the population who want to see it's destruction. If we are forced back into the EU they will be very motivated to elect those of similar mind. No more Edward Heaths, John Majors, or Tony Blairs.

I really want to leave the EU, but Mays deal is so bad I would prefer a referendum vote to withdraw article 50. The UK can then spend its time attempting to destroy the EU from the inside, while waiting for its next chance to leave. We need a UK government and MEPs who will prepare the country to leave. Untangle EU involvement in the UK to make it self sufficient. That means cutting imports from the EU, making supply chains local.

@Durgesuth if the euro zone survives until 2022. It is an unstable currency without central economic control. It cannot survive without a federal government. Do you really think the 27 are going to vote for that. The big secret is that the German banking system is bust and that is about the only thing supporting the euro. It is not going to survive the coming global recession.

@gerbenvanessen do your own research, I did. I am happy to watch and wait. They are plenty of books on catastrophe theory and its application to all kinds of big systems. There are a number of economists who believe the world economy is heading for a crash. The Trump administration has removed the controls put in place after the last crash, they were intended to stop the next.
