@sandall7398 it is interesting that the us is so keen on the UK keeping international agreements when it is so happy to break so many. The us is happy to trigger a war between Israel and the Palestinians. There are many more international agreements that the US is happy to break. Hypocrites!!

Do we want a trade agreement with the US? Not sure I want chlorinated chicken or the privatisation of the NHS, and in any case how will we tell, the EU is in a trade war with the US. Nancy pelosi is the democrat equivalent of Trump, so if she ever gains power in the US it will be more of the same, just with new management in control.

@LeMerch difficult not to laugh at the EU, so desperate to stop the UK leaving they are prepared to give the UK endless Brexit extensions, risking the election of Eurosceptic UK MEPs. Funniest still is the willingness to mock the UK about the threat of buying chlorinated chicken from the US while hypocritically desperate to arrange it's own trade deals with the US,and being rebutted by US trade sanctions. Can't have it both ways, can't claim the UK is the 51st state of the US, while being happy to reject a trade deal with the US. We are not about to exchange the tyranny of the EU with that of the US. If a no deal Brexit results in the EU insisting on the closure of the Irish border, so be it.

joe caterman the Dems will win. At least I hope they do, the US needs a break from that monster Trump. I am aware that the democratics are not friends of the UK. They are dominated by the Irish nationalist diaspora. But the EU is an increasing threat to the US, so maybe American self interest will win.

@Mulligan71991 it is simple, the UK has lost its industry to imports. Make imports more expensive and encourage local production. Do the same thing and expecting a different outcome is madness. We have tried EU membership, it did not work, it made us poorer. The world is waking up to the fact that globalisation is evil. Those who support it are the ones who are destroying the world. I assume you are in this camp.

@Mulligan71991 you must be really dense if you have unable to see how globalisation is destroying the world. It only serves the interests of the super rich who control big business. They are the ones who make money from exploiting the wealth differentials that exist across the world. Globalisation has accelerated the destruction of the natural environment. It is not efficient to transport products across the world when they can be made or grown locally. The EU uses such trade to bind the member states together by making them as codependent as possible. It is substantially unnecessary. The growing wealth gap between the super rich and the rest of society can be traced back to globalisation. It make human society more unstable and less resilient, as it concentrates specialist product production in fewer places in the world. It creates debt and unemployment in the consumer nations. Nothing about globalisation is good and it will bring about the destruction of the planet ecosystem and the associate destruction of the human race. The current measure of progress is GDP, yet this requires limitless growth from the finite resources of the planet. If any one is small minded, it is you and the selfish people like you, who are happy if they are doing alright, if as the world burns. You are clearly a myopic fool, doomed to die in the mass extinction you are so willing to create.

@anthonyburke5677 I have never said that, prove it. Such an arrangement would be at odds with my idea of self sufficiency and the need to protect the UK home market.

@LeMerch the only parallel with the play ground is the bully, demanding that everyone does what the bully says. You keep confusing the actions of a few europhiles in the UK government with the rest of the population. We want to leave the corrupt EU. We want to be an independent nation again, not huddle together for safety in the protection racket that is the EU.

Michael Halligan all you need to do is pursued the Northern Irish to vote for reunification, but as this seems to difficult, so you want the UK government to do it for you. Unfortunately things have changed since 1921, removing the decision from the UK government.

Michael Halligan if as you say there is already a majority for reunification, why have you not call for a referendum on the issue. The UK government would no doubt welcome being relived of the burden and would significantly benefit from the cash windfall that it would produce. Not sure if the EU or the RoI would welcome such a move, particularly as it would be wholly instigated by the Northern Irish citizens, freeing the UK government for any responsibility and allowing it to claim that it is just carrying out the democratic will of the people. Of course the RoI and the EU would be expected to replace the £20 billion a year grant that the UK supplies to NI and there would be the little matter of a not insignificant section of the NI population that would oppose the move, most likely with considerable violence. But that would be an EU and RoI problem, nothing to do with the rUK any more.

@MrJesperSvendsen Irish Americans concerned about restarting the troubles, that's rich considering they financed the last lot. Do they not want the hassle of getting out their collection tins again?
