Comments by "Nigel Johnson" (@nigeljohnson9820) on "EU's priorities in Africa should be rule of law, equality and democracy, says MEP" video.
@contemporiser I understand the problem, but who decided it was the EU's function to interfere? How is it going to avoid appearing as a colonial power? How are we to be sure of EU altruistic motives? Who provided the weapons for the Africans? It could be argued that the Americans had similar motives in stopping the taleban in Afghanistan.

Africa should be aware that foreign investors expect to take out more than they put in. The EU will impose their idea of the rule of law, eventually with military force, as the french want to do. It might worthwhile if the EU intends to protect Africa's environment and wildlife, but global business interests will be willing to sacrifice both for a profit.

@KharlHungus the Chinese already are. At first the indigenous population greeted the Chinese involvement with enthusiasm, but Africans are being to understand that China's interest is purely commercial, selfish, and cares little for the environment or the indigenous population. It is basically exploitation of the natural resources. The destruction of local wildlife for quack Chinese's medicine is particularly iniquitous.

@imluvinyourmum no, unskilled, unemployable, benefit claimants for the EU. I suspect the pandemic will create a sufficient labour pool from the indigenous population.

@contemporiser and you think a military intervention will reduce the number of refugees. That is not the experience of the US, admittedly, the us never had to deal with the refugees it's interventions produced. The are a number of flaws in the argument, first of which is how many coming to Europe are economic migrants. Second, where African conflicts are concerned, there is always a shortage of food and shelter, but never a shortage of weapons. How much food can be purchased for the price of one rocket propelled grenade or an AK-47 and a box of ammunition? If the tribal wars were less lucrative they would not happen. The NGOs and charities ask for money to compensate for the profiteering of the armaments manufacturers and exploiters. Instead of pouring money in, it would be a lot better to stop the money pouring out. When the WWF asks for money to save endangered species, a very laudable cause, what they are really doing is asking for money to mitigate the profits of those exploiting the animals and the environment. WWF's efforts would be unnecessary if it were not for those in the world exploiting the environment and killing the animals. This suggests a more efficient strategy is to stop the exploitation in the first place.
