  1. Putin wants a cold winter in Europe before he attacks. No doubt he intends to use the threat of cutting russian gas supplies to mute any resistance, or protests, from the EU. Tracing this crisis back to its origin, it was EU attempts to expand, offering to let Ukraine become a member that was the starting point. This removed Ukraine as a buffer. That said, it has been clear for some time that Putin wants to rebuild the USSR, he has admitted as much in interviews.
