This has nothing to do with the issue of BLM, merely to do with the gesture. There was the clench fist in the air, but that was just a bit to close to the NAZI salute. Taking the knee is very close to a bow. Its origin might be traced back to praying or simple the opposite to standing when the US national anthem is played. There are only a few body positions that might be used. Folding the arms fails to express the necessary feeling of defiance. Other positions are taken by various militaries around the world. Thus taking the knee is a position of prayer is a good an explanation as any and has dignity without being threatening.
