@Adolf Shitler it is very true that Germany has the darkest history of all the nations in Europe and has good reason to be ashamed, but every colonial nation which had an Empire, including Britain have dark areas in their past of which they cannot be proud. It is Germany's misfortune that it's darkest period is also the most recent, where as Britain's occurred centuries ago, the worst arguably being its part in the slave trade. So be careful when casting stones.

@maanze9284 as cost benefit ratio shifts towards every higher costs and diminishing benefits, they may not want the EU to continue to exist. The Germans expected to rule Europe not pay for it. The will want their old currency back when the euro starts to fall. The may want out when the eurocrats start to give them orders.

@maanze9284 no Germany has had a free ride since the war. It has not been required to pay for its own defence, in fact it was positively frowned upon. It received huge amounts of money to rebuild its industry and was let off paying war reparations. The structure of the euro zone kept the German currency competitively low, this arguable at the expense of the other members of the EU. All the above has given Germany the financial muscle to dominate the EU and Merkel has used that soft power to tell the other member states what to do. Unfortunately for germany the good times are coming to an end. France is using brexit to challenge Germany using its military credentials. There is significant financial weakness in the euro zone and federalisation is being opposed by a number of member states. Worse still the EU civil servants now think themselves the masters and have started to tell Germany what it must do.

@guleiro for someone not trying to repeat your history, you are doing a good job of setting up all that is required to repeat it. I do not need to set the seeds of division they are already planted deep in the European psyche.

Your problem is that you live in dream land EU, with no view of your future. According to the eurocrats "everything is for the best in the best of all possible worlds". You are in fact living in an Orwellian world heading for a dystopian future, but you are to blind or stupid to see it.

@fabioshire97 those who do not study the past are destined to repeat it. We know German history is so painful and shameful that it is being rewritten. Don't worry, it is the French who will take the EU to war this time. They are building their claim to lead the EU on their military power, being the only remaining nuclear power left in the EU post brexit. They want to control the fledgling EU military force. Initially they will have no appetite for major military confrontations, just asymmetrical police actions to defend access to resources, mainly in Africa. Unfortunately for the EU this will inevitably bring them into conflict with one of the other big power blocks. Alternatively, pride will bring the EU into the war on terror. If the EU army already existed, it would already be in conflict with Russia in the Ukraine and Syria. In future its navy may challenge Chinese expansionist policy in the south China sea. Once the EU forms a federal super state it won't be long before its army is used to suppress internal protest. Brick by brick the EU is building its dystopian future.

@maanze9284 no I am happy that we will be able to watch it from a safe distance, at least that will be the case if its destruction is from internal revolutionary forces or financial collapse. We might not be so lucky if the EU decides to confront the Russians, maybe in the Balkans. The only reason the US supported NATO was because it preferred to fight its limited nuclear war on German soil.

I think your external enemies will have something to say about your weapon building plans, though I doubt they are particularly worried give the reliability of your engineering. The German beating heart of Europe appears to be heading for a coronary, a myocardial infarction.

@maanze9284 had the Russians sent its armer rolling across Europe, the US planned to stop them with tactical nuclear weapons, including atomic land mines. The plan is well documented. As for your French allies, they are the ones who build aircraft carriers with tiny submarine nuclear power plants that overheat. However, I am sure the French will emulate the US plan for the defence of europe. They will fight for every inch , sorry centimetre, of scorched German soil, right up to the point the tanks reach France, and then they will surrender. That last part is a bit silly, they will surrender long before then. While I enjoy trading ever more hysterical insults with you, it is rather pointless. Time will tell if my dystopian predictions are correct, but history is not on your side, empires usually end badly. It must not be forgotten that the real purpose of the EU is to provide money and power to a small super rich elite. The people of Europe are just cannon fodder, slaves for the multinational industrial complex.

@guleiro political union may have been the original goal of the eu, but when the common market was sold to the UK people, the idea of political union was not mentioned. There was a plot to lock the UK people into a political union against their will by deceiving them. This is not a lie it has been documented by a foreign office report of the time. This report has recently been declassified under the thirty year rule, ref FCO 30/1048. The ostensive reason that political union was part of the plan was to bind the countries together in an effort to make conflict impossible. The international banks that were participants in the formation of the common market had an ulterior motive, their goal was to creat an environment for the multinational companies to exist as a means of enrich the super rich elite of Europe, their banking clients. This relationship has also been documented.

@guleiro the European mind set as seen centuries of Warfare between European states. They huddle together now against the perils of the world, but also in an effort to limit the available room for their closest neighbours to stab them in the back. They are really as united as a bag of rats. No matter how hard the EU attempts to suppress the national differences, they are still just below the surface. The French, Germans and laughably the Italians, jostle for position to control the EU.
