The EU should remove the backstop from the exit agreement or face a no deal brexit with no backstop and none of the other agreed terms of the agreement, including the divorce bill.

@danielpalin there is so much wrong with your post. Ireland has given its sovereignty to the EU. It is Ireland that is trying to impose its will on the UK. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, when the UK leaves the EU, so does NI, were it not for the the GFA, there would be a border between the RoI and the UK. As it is, if there is a no deal brexit, it will be the EU that imposes a border in Ireland or between RoI and the rest of the EU. Ireland has no right legally or morally to force be UK to remain within the EU customs union. If NI votes for reunification, then it becomes an EU and RoI responsible ( the order reflecting who is really governs the RoI), until such time as that happens, NI remains part of the UK and must abide by the result of the brexit referendum and must accept the consequences of that vote.

@jebbo-c1l you really do not understand the logic of the UK leavings input a deal. By default the UK is leaving the eu, if there is not a deal there is not a backstop. Neither the EU or the RoI has any say in the matter. No deal = No backstop

@danielpalin as far as I am aware the UK has repeatedly stated it will not build a border between NI and the RoI. If a border is put in place, it will by the EU. NI cannot be used to trap he UK in the EU customs union. When the UK leaves without a deal, all the EU needs to do is offer the UK, at minimum the same trade deal it has with Japan or Canada. That should be sufficient to keep he border open. It is he EU that wants to punish the UK for leaving, so address your anger at it, as it will be the one that closes the border and apply tariffs to UK imports, that will be reciprocated by the UK on EU imports.

@danielpalin have you read the agreement? If you had you would understand that it is a trap.

@danielpalin not sure what you find funny. The inclusion of the backstop ensures the agreement will not be ratified by the UK parliament. In the unlikely event that May funds a way to force it through, it will not be honoured by future UK governments.

@danielpalin it seems that Canada and Japan can. It is only the UK that the EU will not treat as a sovereign independent country.
