  1.  @henryseidel5469  the Russia's have most likely protected Iran from a US rocket attack a few months ago. Not sure if the Russians will come to Iran's aid if they attack US shipping. The EU is no match for Russia, so will condemned Iran's action, apply a few more sanctions and do not a lot else, but the US will launch a missile attack having agreed with Putin that Russia will not come to Iran's aid this time.

  2.  @henryseidel5469  that is why the US wants Iran to attack one of its ships, it provides the necessary justification for war. I can only guess the reasons for the animosity between the US and Iran. States do not usually bear grudges, or operate from reasons of vengeance or anger. They are usually motivated by money or threat and their reasons are rational. The exception is terrorist organisations, like the Isis caliphate, or those driven by religious zealotry.or those controlled by a deranged dictator. It is possible for a state to be motivated by more than one reason, where it's government is made up of factions, part motivated by money and by ideology. In the case of the US there are many reasons, I have no doubt that Israel is in the background fanning the flames of war, Trump want to be a war president and the US military industrial complex wants money and the Iran is seen as a terrorist threat and the religious right see Islam as a threat, the latter is ironic really given the us choice of allies in the middle East. Saudi Arabia is probably agree to sponsor of terrorism. Iran is no angel, it it driven by religious zealots and expansionist ambitions. It likes to play the innocent while sponsoring all kind of clandestine actions to further its ambitions.
