@JamesSmith-ix5jd there were three super states in 1984, Oceania, Eurasia, and Eastasia. It is Oceania that most closely fits the description of Russia, with its double think logic, its creation of an artificial enemy to facilitate control of the people, and its controlling propaganda, and the lies about its success in the perpetual War. Russia even has its version of the thought police. Putin is the epitome of the evil big brother.
Thinking about it, Eurasia fits China very well, as in the book it is converted from enemy to friend in the blink of an eye, as allegiances shift.

@JamesSmith-ix5jd I cannot deny there are certain similarities, but that is true of all the big power blocks. The EUs bureaucracy is akin to that in the book.
I suspect there are other science fiction books that better describe the US.
The republican party is certainly rabid, and full of contradictions, with its church going, gun carrying "Christian zealots" who are both pro-life and in favour of the death penalty. In favour of freedom, except in matters of sex.
Anti russian communists who elect a russian communist puppet as president. Pro US, who offshore their critical industries to their enemies.
It is what you get when democracy strays too far from the centre ground, go to extremes and you get Russia or China, dictatorial kleptocracy, indistinguishable from the far left to the far right, yet identical in every other respects. It is why Russia can be described as Nazi fascist. It is why Stalin and Hitler could form non aggression pacts.
