What is required is to stop manufacturers from building obsolescence into products by making the products software obsolete. Each time a computer operating system is updated, many of the associated computer peripherals become obsolete, not through hardware failure, but because the driver software is no longer supported. This creates a mountain of electronic waste made of working hardware. By making mobile products, such as phone's, tablets and laptops with sealed for life batteries, the whole product is consigned to waste, rather than just a user replaceable battery.
