Let the Russians build the pipeline and then don't use it. The EU is just as likely to ban the use of all fossil fuels in the near future, given the speed at which the devastating effects of global warming are becoming apparent.

@georgemavrides3434 don't be ridiculous, of course this is a Putin regime. It is the corrupt heart of the current Russian government. It is why all opposition is outlawed, and why any who voice opposition risk an untimely death. It is a dictator ship, just like China and North Korea. Putin is just a more successful version of the Belarus dictator.

@johnal3890 the in is unlikely to ban fossil fuels, because russia has a veto, but that won't stop member countries banning it. Germany and the rest of europe may simply decide that they don't want russian gas.

@johnal3890 no that is simply wishful thinking by whose on the wrong side of history. I sure the gas light manufactures said the same thing when they saw the first electric light.

@user-ts1gj9wb6u wrong again, the us is one of the countries with an abundance of the minerals needed for an electric future. It is only those who make their money from oil, gas and coal who are complaining. Even the oil companies know the days of dependence on fossil fuels is over. It is those who purchased fossil fuel reserves, expecting them to be a good investment, who are fighting to force the continued use of such materials.

@suomalainenmekko6131 does that include the methane generated by melting permafrost? Russia environmental record is not very good, when the damage resulting from radioactive waste is considered.

@ZIGZAG12345 If electric cars are not powered by green electricity, then their is no advantage to the environment. The Germans may want the gas, but it comes with two major draw backs. First it is certainly not environmental friendly, second it supports the Putin regime, and makes Germany dependent upon it. Climate change may force Germany to stop using natural gas. Politically, it will be interesting to see how Germany reacts to Putin blackmail, once a dependent relationship has been established. Will Germany be arguing against sanctions against russia, when putin again breaks international law with another assassination attempt of his critics, or maybe when he finally decides to invade the Ukraine?

@ZIGZAG12345 James lovelock reached the conclusion sometime ago, that nuclear power was currently the only solution to global warming that would save the human race from extinction. His argument was very compelling. Since I am not in russia, I have no choice but construct my views of reality from the western media. Fortunately the diversity of this media gives some hope of getting at the truth. Certainly is is likely to be more reliable that that likely to be generated by Putin's propaganda machine. His actions betray his future intentions. There is no denying he is a dictator, who has made himself leader for life. He has certainly a record of violently eliminating his opposition, sometimes by using WMD. Russia cannot play the moral card, it has a history just as dark as any of the western powers, and it has its own problems with radical Islam and Muslims. Before the us was in Afghanistan, the Russians were the occupiers. Its possible that Merkel think she can control Putin's russia and will not be blackmailed, but that has yet to be proven. It is clear all the big power blocks have expansionist plans, but like China, Russia's are very destructive. I firmly believe that Putin's intention is to rebuild the russian sphere of influence back to that of the soviet-era. All the indications are that putin runs russia like the Mafia organisation. His acquisition of new weapons has started a new cold war arms race. I am not so naive as to identify the US as the good guy. Its greed and failings are obvious. While applauding cooperation between free independent democratic sovereign states, there is reason to be concerned about the possibility of the establishment of a global federal system or the rule of an increasingly powerful ultra rich elite few. These are the nightmares of twentieth century science fiction, which are rapidly becoming a reality, thanks largely to technological developments.

@georgemavrides3434 you are clearly not keeping up with developments, home heating and power is certainly possible with green technology, many are doing it already. There is really no alternative, as a failure to stop the use of fossil fuels will result on the earth becoming a dead planet. Even the oil companies now understand their is no profit in a dead planet. Russian oil and gas should remain in the ground, Putin should concentrate on keeping russian permafrost methane in the ground,
