This conflict can be traced back to the EU encouraging a more liberal Ukrainian to join the EU, destroying the buffer with Russia. Putin is now using this as an excuse to further his plan to rebuild the old USSR. Funny, how talk of the EU defence force have been slowly replaced with more talk of NATO. The EU stirred up the trouble, now it realises that it will need someone else to defend it from an attack. There is no certainty that any russian invasion will stop at the Ukraine, after all Russia will want to establish a new buffer, if it manages to consume the whole of Ukraine. The other Baltic states should also be worried, as Putin has will not be content with re-establishing the former USSR satellite States, he wants to integrate them into Russia. This maybe as a over reaction to the humiliation he feels Russia suffered during the fall of the old USSR.

The west made the mistake of giving Putin reason to think it is a paper tiger. Ironically the world was a lot safer, when Russia did not question western resolve and military capabilities. Recent actions by the EU in questioning NATO and arguing for its own military force have weakened western defences. But US actions in Afghanistan, and other recent military conflicts, have sown doubt about US military superiority and invulnerability. The world was safer when the russians believe they could not win in any serious conflict involving the US, even if that belief was a self delusion.
