@kajula_kadphises that may be so but the cost to Russia will be so great that Putin's position will be put at risk. The way in Ukraine will go on for decades, once started. It will be a replay of the fall of the USSR, with Russia actually lossing territory in the end.
The russian strategy has already failed, in that there are now more NATO troops near the russian border than ever before, an area that was previously of little interest to NATO, and all the former Soviet satellite states are now seeking the protection of NATO or increasing their own defences. This campaign must be costing Russia a fortune, and at best all it will get out of this is an additional liability. The EU will certainly be reluctant to increase its dependence on russian gas, and will likely reduce it.
The Asia pipe line is yet to be built, and China will be able to take advantage of Russian desperation to find a new market for its gas. In the mean time it will be fighting a guerrilla War in Ukraine, that might well spread. The US will see the new russian threat and start a new cold war arms race. Putin should have quite while he was ahead, it's all negative for him from now on.
