@SPENKER52 at the time there were those in the Kremlin who wanted to comp6,etely cut the supply of gas to Europe, as a means of weakening the will to support Ukraine. Simply turning off the gas was not an option, as that would put the Russian supplier in breach of contract, but if the pipe line was destroyed the supply could not be held responsible. Prior to the pipe line being blown up, Russia had tried to cut the gas supply by claiming mechanical faults with the pumping system, but that excuse could not permanently stop the flow of gas.
You are correct that a faction in Russia wanted the supply to be maintained, to keep the money rolling in, but the need to stop EU support of Ukraine took precedence. There maybe a connection with the untimely deaths of Gazprom officials around this time. Maybe they were in favour of maintaining the gas flow.
It must be remembered that Russia, under Putin, is run like the mafia, and disagreeing with the "Don" can be very bad for your health.
