In this case the French have a valid point. However, post brexit the French will not have access to UK waters. In both cases it is important that environmental protection is paramount. All fishing must be sustainable and not damage the environment.

@LouiseKernow2024 the French boats were being excluded from French coastal waters, while the UK boats were allowed to fish. The French were attempting to preserve the scallops stocks. In this case it was the British boats taking advantage. It was not in the interest of either side to deplete the scallop stocks below a sustainable level. I would be just as concerned if the French were fishing in UK waters. Post brexit the French boats access to UK waters will be restricted or banned. It is in the interests of both sides to reach an agreement, maybe dividing up the days were each side can fish. UK waters have suffered similar abuse by the French and Dutch factory fishing boats. After brexit this exploitative fishing must end in UK waters. If the French want any access to UK waters they must reciprocate.

@LouiseKernow2024 the more I read about this the more I agree with you.

The Law I hate the idea of siding with the French, but if reports are true that they are protecting the scallop during the breading season, then I am forced to agree with them. It is very short sighted for UK boats to fish the scallops to extinction. The UK boats may have the legal right to fish, but there actions are those of an irresponsible poacher. I would give the same response for fishing in UK waters, it is essential to protect the fish stocks and the environment. My comments are based on the news reports that say the French government banned French boats fishing in those waters during the breading season of the scallops. If true, the argument is sound. I am not on the side of the French, I am on the side of the scallops.

The Law how does it profit the UK boats to risk driving the scallop to extinction. This is what the Chinese do. Is it just the UK boats emptying French waters before they are excluded? If the fishermen want to take back control of UK waters they should be showing that they will fish in a responsible and sustainable manner. The last thing the UK needs is a short lived boom in the UK fishing industry followed by a bust when the waters have become lifeless. There is a real danger that once the EU knows that UK waters will be closed to EU boats after brexit, the EU fisherman will try and empty UK waters during the transition period.
