No it does not. The backstop is a trap from which the UK can only escape after agreeing an extensive trade deal with the EU. The EU effectively has the final say, therefore the trade deal must be advantageous to the EU. How advantageous? Very advantageous. The UK can expect demands for free access to UK fishing waters, the loss of UK territories, such as Gibraltar and the demand for the UK to remain in the EU customs union, with all that entails in terms of control by the ECJ and the acceptance of EU directives. May's deal is the worst of all options, it is a bad deal.

@taintabird23 while in the EU, the UK was in a mess and the longer it remains, the worse the mess becomes. If the UK is forced to remain in the EU it should be a net recipient from the EU budget. The UK simply cannot afford to remain while it has an £80 billion annually deficit with the EU. Only leaving will give the freedom to change policy to reduce this deficit. The past forty plus years have shown that EU membership has not solved the problem. Doing the same thing and expecting a different result is one definition of madness.

@taintabird23 EU membership has not fixed the problem. The question to ask is: if the UK was in such a poor state when it joined, why was it always a net contributor to the EU budget, surely it should have been a beneficiary from the start?
