It is said that you keep your friends close, but your enemies closer. If Boris makes any attempt to soften the UK stance on Brexit, or allow the EU to cross any of the red lines, he now has a powerful critic outside government who will make sure the UK public understand the betrayal. If anything, this make the chances of a deal even less likely, particularly as Boris will be able to blame Dominic Cummings and his associate for any problems. A clue to which way the government will jump now will be the fate of the internal market bill, that rewrites part of the withdrawal agreement. While this bill might be behind the changes at number 10, Boris will find it difficult to change course without confirming that Mr Cummings was the real policy controller in Downing Street.
A change in direction now and Boris is unlikely to remain PM. The last time the europhiles tried such a political coup, we ended with an even more euroscept government, the the EU members had better be careful what they wish for, or they may find the whole of the withdrawal agreement torn up.
