  1. If you deny people the right for self determination using a federal law, the likely outcome is civil disobedience followed by civil war. If sufficient numbers of the population support civil disobedience, the state becomes ungovernable. The federal government must then use military oppression.

  2. b2st__paradise you are very naive if you think Spain will not use the military to force Catalan region to obey. They will have no choice if civil disobedience is used in protest. It will take only weeks for this to descend into violence. The Spanish police, which are already a military in disguise, will call for the support of the army. The EU will protect but do nothing.

  3. Sergio Flag was that the logic that was applied to the basque separatists. As I recall they did a lot of damage and killed a few people, before giving up the gun and the bomb. If the Catalans make a disproportionate amount of Spain's wealth, all they have to do is stop working or paying taxes. Spain might then find it difficult to pay its militia. Using military force against a civil population would get Spain expelled from the EU. Now that would be funny, Spain gets kicked out of a federation for trying to keep the Catalans in one.
