It is not only cow waste that should be processed, every day humans produce significant waste, all of which contains valuable chemicals. Currently this waste is disposed of in a very wasteful fashion, sometimes with significant damage to the environment. Worse still, these valuable chemicals that are thrown away, are replaced by the same chemicals that are very expensively synthesized by the chemical industry, using lots of expensive energy. We are talking about nitrates, ammonia, phosphates, and hydrogen among others. What is required is better management of such waste to maximise Useful chemical recovery and minimise the release of potential toxic waste to the environment.
There was a time when urine was a national resource, key to the manufacture of gun powder. It is certainly better to recover nitrates and phosphates from waste, to use as farm fertiliser, than allow the chemical industry to manufacture these vital chemicals from the atmosphere, or minerals.
