It seems to me that most of these reasons don't really apply to normal driving. We don't all go drag racing in our cars daily, for instance, so we won't be overheating our torque converters all the time. I've never heard of a drivetrain wearing out from all the launching; it's the clutch that goes after much time. As for creeping in slow traffic, that is good advice regarding automatic being better. If I lived where I was in creeping traffic every day I would change that situation by moving or changing jobs or something... yuck! The story from old is that a manual will save on fuel over the same car with an automatic. The best thing for driving a manual is to "keep your cotton pickin' foot off the clutch pedal!" That was advice to a letter writer to Road and Track magazine back in the 70's. Don't even rest your foot on the clutch between shifts, no matter how soon it's going to be, and your clutch will last a good long time.
