Whenever a new tech comes out, I'm sure it's more efficient, more smart etc, but the question is always about reliability and longevity...

@steffen12 heat pumps are inherently more complex mechanisms than resistive or gas heating. It has compressor and pressurized refrigerant. More moving parts and potential for failure.

I concede heat pump dryer seems better. If AC can last over 15-20 years, so should heat pump dryer. However if your electricity is cheap then it makes little sense to spend more on heat pump. I pay only $0.028 or 2.8 cents per kwh and wash clothes only twice a week. That works out to $6 savings per year by switching to heat pump dryer. I'll never be able to recoup the added cost

@steffen12 my point exactly. These new gadgetts don't save money for owners as they are expensive and prone to failure.

@DemonXplaid in southern Ontario you get the new ultra low overnight rate of 2.8 cents Canadian per kwh. Mid tier is 12.8 cents and peak time is 28 cents between 4-9 pm .I do laundry after 11 pm to take advantage of ultra low rate and EV charging of course.

@thecooljohn100 from the EV proponents. The less moving parts the better right?

@chadw4969 Which car is that? How do you keep it from rusting?

@irri4662 Yes, the trouble is the trend seems that everyone is focusing on efficiency these days, and not realize they could be trading off durability and longevity. Throwing away your appliance / cars after just a few years, and getting another newer shinier model seems to be the trend these days.

There is also a question how quickly it can dry. My current resistive venting unit can finish drying in half hour. I live in a small house so I can hear the dryer noise, won't be able to sleep until it's done. I usually start it at 11 pm that's when my ultra low overnight rate of 2.8 cents / kwh starts. If I get a heat pump unit that takes more time, I'll have to start earlier when the electricity rate costs 12.8 cents / kwh. Is there really any savings then? There are many factors to consider not just absotely kwh efficiency, but money and time efficiency as well.

@rickybobby7276 my point exactly. Now that everything is connected to software. They can simply obsolete your machine with the next software update after it reaches past warranty, or at least reduce efficiency to push you to buy a newer model

@geeval3910 Industry trend is efficiency efficiency, nothing else. I'm not surprised the ease of maintenance by DIYers is not even on their consideration. Probably even discouraged so you can just buy new ones if they break sooner.
