I wouldn't not have a gas furnace if you live in San Diego, but it's hard to get rid of natural gas heating in Canada. Heat pump will not be very efficient in the coldest time of winter, and will be loud vibrating.

It's the drilling on roof part I'm not comfortable with especially on a old house. I've installed a few panels on metal awnings, but I will never allow drilling on my roof. Also, I'm getting 2.8 cents Canadian overnight rate to charge my EV, it makes little financial sense to get solar panels where I live.

Why do inverters wear out anyway? It's usually the capacitors that go out by end of life. They should design inverters with replacable capacitors instead of having to replace the whole unit. All the wires an other components don't degrade, it's only capacitors, the cost of replacement is much lower than having to buy new inverters.

@persona250 That's what I did. I have 4x12V 100AH LFP batteries charged up to be used at peak rate hours . Only cost me $1500 CAD including inverter and chargers. It will pay for itself in 4-5 years, plus now I have a backup power during power outages.

@jeffericsson7780 at the current rate my pay back period for panels is 40 years. Unless the rates increase dramatically it makes no economic sense to install large panels on my roof. I have a small 300 w panels on the awning just for emergency backup not looking to get pay back at all. It only cost me $400 anyway and I could it up myself.
