Not just EVs. BMW X5, gas model only got 4 stars also. These legacy brands rely on customer royalty and brand perception to maintain sales. Have you looked at the reliability ratings for most of European and American cars? They are horrendous.

No EVs don't have to be computers on wheels. Tesla started the trend but you can use simple controllers to drive electric motors, it's not rocket science. BYDs lack autononomous features like Tesla, but it also has less complicated software therefore more reliable and will not "brick" the car. The more features you put in the more likely you have a bug to brick the car - ie. Tesla

@wolfgangpreier9160 What's wrong with their safety now? You can say you don't like their design / performace / feature / price etc. Their safety is still better than some of the brands you mentioned. Almost all of them are 5 star safety ratings, All Volvos passed IIHS small overlap crash tests the first time it was introduced. Most of other car makers failed on the first year when it was introduced, but only fixed it afterwards. Volvo does their own inhouse crash tests way before IIHS or Euro NCAP test them. In my book, Volvo and Tesla, now maybe BYD are the only trustworthy safe cars. BTW, you mentioned Mazda in your safe brand list, FYI, 2023 CX-9 failed IIHS moderate overlap test.

@elmohead yes but the more complex the software the more likely it will have bugs and brick the car. Simpler it is the more reliable

@elmohead That's exactly what I'm saying. EV doesn't necessarily need complicated software.

@wolfgangpreier9160 X5 is extremely popular in North America. However regardless of its popularity, the fact that it's selling price is around $100k and with it's imposing size people automatically assume it's a safe car. Yet it rates lower than even Mazda 3. What a joke BMW

@wolfgangpreier9160 you forget Volvo

@wolfgangpreier9160 did I say all of them are bad? Given that X5 is such a popular vehicle in many markets and its imposing presence. Many people don't really question its safety I can name a few more such as range Rover discovery and most of Audi q series from a few years ago, the current Q3 (2023) still failed side crash test. Jeep Grand Cherokee, Mazda CX-9, Honda Pilot, Toyota 4Runner, Highlander, Tacoma, all 2023 model year failed IIHS small or moderate overlap crash tests. These cars should be 5 star safety ratings given how popular and how many people trust in them. As opposed to "cheap Chinese" cars. They are actually worse and cheaply built than Chinese cars.

@wolfgangpreier9160 Which Volvo are you talking about being subpar? I looked at Euro Ncap and IIHS for Volvo XC90. They are all over 90%, and IIHS 5 stars with top safety pick+, and that has been since its introduction in 2003
