Of course EV sales should be good in places like California and Australia where weather is mild. Most EVs are built like they will never have to be in -10c with 3 ft snow. Think low ground clearance and flush door handles that will freeze shut. Not to mention low temperature will reduce range and heating cabin reduces it further.

If you care about pollution, don't drive a car at all. Take public transit. Most of Tesla and EV buyers are affluent demographic. They also tend to own big houses and take multiple vacations every year flying to distant places. I would say Tesla owners on average have way higher carbon footprint than a struggling individual driving a 15 year old Corolla.

@richardgrant418 one not example Tesla model y. They call it crossover. Its ground clearance is higher than Toyota Camry

Most current EV designs focuses on range under IDEAL CONDITIONS so that it looks good on paper. Low ground clearance and flush door handles are meant for that. The problem is for us in the North, we don't care about 2% more range flush door handles if it means having to spend 20 min in the freezing rain with hair dryer just to get the door open. The 2-3% range improvement is negligible in cold weather anyway. Temperature and direction of wind affects range way more than the gimmicky door handles that's hard to use

@richardgrant418 almost all of them. BMW ix vs X5. Volvox XC90 vs ex90 etc.

@richardgrant418 heater drains way more than AC. AC is not essential for survival. But heater is

@StormyDog I bet you baby your Tesla in the warmth of your garage. I only have a driveway no garage. I learned the hard way that never leave it plugged in over night in winter or charge port can get frozen shut too and you will be late for work.

@erik5820 it's hard to pick. For example i wanted rivian for it's high ground clearance but its door handles are flush. Im just saying majority of EVs now seem to follow the same design philosophy that is not giving consumer wide choices. Maybe cyber truck I hope is rugged enough. your country must have a good snow plow service. Here in Canada they sometimes leave a huge pile of snow right in front of your driveway you have to shovel it before you can drive your car out unless it's a Jeep or truck with higher ground clearance you can just drive over the snow hump. Norway also has good charging infrastructure so most people can charge car at work or train station, so less range anxiety for running heater in cold weather

@erik5820 again it's got nothing to do with ice car or EVs. Except it's easier to find ice cars with higher ground clearance. For instance I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee it could easily just drove over the snow hump in emergency when I didn't have time to push the snow. But there are much fewer EVs choices with high ground clearance because they all want to maximize aerodynamic and range. I'm not against EVs just wish they made not choices for cold climate. If you look at BMW ix vs X5, Volvo ex90 vs xc,90 etc.. all of them EV version of SUVs have such low ground clearance compared to ice equivalent. If ground clearance was important to you it's difficult for one to choose EV simply for that reason

@robertwhite3503 not in Canada. Many Canadian homes don't have garage compared to the warmer US to the south. American homes are also bigger on average. If owning an EV means you must have your own garage for heating and charging, how is it good for environment? That means average EV owners have a detached home with a garage and have much more carbon footprint than those living in apartments

@StormyDog even in an unheated garage it's better than outside. At least the charging cable won't have danger of frozen to the car or covered with ice. I seen a cut charging cable at a charging station in my area. I asked worker inside store what happened . Apparently someone was charging the overnight and he couldn't unplug it because low temperature made the release pin inside freeze. They had to choice but to cut it

I had an two EVs but currently I have a XC90 phev. 95% of miles are EV mode. But on those really bad winter days I know there will be freezing rain or heavy snow I don't plug in and I can use ice engine on those days only or other emergencies. So for those who bashing phevs, you don't know the harsh conditions some of us have to endure it's easy to criticize when you are sitting comfortably in warm Australia and California

@capnkirk5528 I never said you can't drive EV in the cold of course you can. It just doesn't last as long as in mild climate and you are always worried about using too much heat to drain battery, so you end up sacrifice your comfort. So you are telling me you don't find -10 cold, you consider -40 cold living in Canada. Congratulations you are good with cold. But it shouldn't be a requirement for owning an EV in cold climate. I don't feel I have to skimp on heating just because I'm driving an EV. I find 18 degrees cold. I always set internal temperature to 26-27 to be comfortable. With gas cars it's not an issue as just recycle a waste heat. In an EV, setting temperature to 26 instead of 18 can reduce range by 40%
