Comments by "Joe Qi" (@i6power30) on "How long do Tesla’s last? This is the longest mileage Tesla Model 3 EVER" video.
@elapplzsl Yes, for some poeple like myself only drive 3 - 5 k miles per year, a Toyota Corola will last 30 years. I know some 40 - 50 year old military vehicles are still in use because they are only used for training excercises and maintained meticulously. So in a sense he is not wrong. It all depends on the usage and application.

@markmiller8903 He is not wrong. an engine can last 30 - 40 years, EV battery will last 12 - 15 years tops, no matter how well maintained they are.

@KP-xi4bj business insiders did a survey on battery replacement age for EVs. Some 20-30% of Tesla model S and Nissan leafs of 12-13 years of age require battery replacement. Again mileage is not a limiting factor for EV longevity as is with ice vehicles. Calendar age is .

ICE are mileage limited, EV batteries are calendar time limited. A block of metal does not degrade with time, but wear out with usage. Battery chemistry degrade with time and charging cycles, not how many miles the car travels around. There are 40 - 50 year old military vehicles that are only used for training excercises, with very low mileage, but well maintained. Modern EVs (as we as gas cars) are limited by aging battery chemistry and electronic components, regardless of mileage usage. Seasonal temperature variation, natural decay of material limits their lifespan.

@MiddleAgedMike sure the new battery tech will probably extend calendar life somewhat but with or without liquid cooling the chemistry in battery will degrade with time regardless of mileage unlike a block of metal that's in the engine typically degrade with friction of usage rather than sitting still

Video title is how LONG do they last, but it emphasizes mileage instead. 6 years is not a long time. Will it last more than 12 years even if it driven low mileage? I've seen reports that 20 - 30% of early model S and LEAF required battery replacement around year 11 - 13. No doubt EVs are better than gas cars in high mileage applications. But I only drive 3 - 5k miles per year. A Toyota corrola will probably last 25 - 30 years. I doubt an EV battery will last more than 15 years even if driven at this low mileage.

@JohnMcAfee-se9ms miles again. I'm not talking miles. I'm talking years

@GWAForUTBE Chinese made Tesla have much tighter panel gaps.

@JohnMcAfee-se9ms you can Google it yourself. Go ahead keep your EV beyond 12 years see what happens

@jalexand007 Yup I agree. but there are many poeple like myself who only drive 3000 miles or less a year, and an EV would be a waste for me.

@jalexand007 Yup agreed again, but there should not be government mandate to remove the ICE choice from even 10% minority who would been better served with.
