Japanese cars have always been unsafe historically and now. I looked at IIHS crash tests of various cars over time. When IIHS first introduced smaller overlap frontal crash tests, almost all Toyota, Honda and other Japanese cars failed. Only some GM models in domestic passed barely. VW, Audi all failed. BMW and Mercedes passed ok. Volvo passed with flying color. A couple of years after this test was run, all Japanese and Korea brands ammended their design to pass this test. This just goes to show you they treat safety as patch work. Only fix the minimum required to pass a crash test from specific angle. To even do that, they have to cheat. Who knows how weak their car is if it's collided at slightly different angle in real world crashes.

People's perception change really slowly. Whenever I tell people Chinese EVs are really great and cheap. The first response is usually, will they meet North American safety standard? They are cheap, how long are they going to last before exploding into fire? lol Toyota cars on the other hand, no question about quality or safety ever come up. Just take my money, I want to get one before my neighbour does.
