@tromboneJTS cheaper doesn't mean inferior. Often cheaper Chinese EVs are higher in specs and quality than German ones.

@Pigeonbm GDP per capita in China has grown 30% since 2019. People just spend less and save more due to real estate collapse. They didn't really become poor.

German cars are garbage compared to Chinese brands, in terms of quality and reliability.

Not in China. Cheese consumers have been preferring German and Japanese cars for decades until very recently Chinese cars got better than foreign brands. Chinese consumers have no patriotism they are pragmatic.

@Pigeonbm nope I think the 30% increase most came from rural migration of the extremely poor into cities. The middle class or above has mostly been stagnant.

@Pigeonbm China is a big country. Depending on who you talk to, where they live, you get different impressions. If you only talk to a couple of people living in Shanghai, Beijing or Shenzhen, doing knowledge work, you will proably get a gloomy picture. Do you know anyone who work in EV manufacturing or renewable energy industry? These sectors have been absolutely booming, and created a lot of jobs. Perhaps some rural population became factory workers in EV factories or solar farm deployment field. This might explain the rise in average GDP per capita. White collar workers in the cities had stagnant salaries, but many blue collar jobs being created elevated the average as a whole.
