I'm mid 40s. I've been around the block. My last relationship lasted just 7 months, 5 months dating & 2 months committed. As soon as I gave her commitment, it all went downhill...she completely changed. Until this point, I didn't know much about BPD. Then I read about it in the DSM-5, and she checked all the boxes.
One thing I'll add that Dr Taraban doesn't say here - while dating a borderline is fun, exciting, and the sex is great - once you are truly "together" in a relationship, there's an extreme lack of trust. Like, you wouldn't trust this person for an hour's time in your absence. Borderlines can completely destroy your ability to trust anyone.
I got out quickly (2 months committed LTR), but it left some scars. Basically my decision came down to: I'm going to lose either way. I'm going to lose by staying, or I'm going to lose by leaving. I chose the option that at least demonstrated self-respect.
