They chose judaism and are actually converts. This occurred towards the latter end of the first millenium, AD. Some years back a team of jewish geneticists conducted tests on both peoples. It was discovered that not one of the Jews was linked to the line of Abraham and had no connection to the land, whereas a great many of their Palestinian neighbours not only had the link, but could be traced to the House of Cohen! Not what you wanted to hear, I'll bet, but true, nevertheless. The ashkenazis are the false Jews, mentioned in both the Hebrew and christian bibles.
