In the UK, patients at Broadmoor Hospital (where the criminally insane were incarcerated) were experimented upon, using sensory deprivation cabinets. Some were allegedly kept in them for days on end, until they lost all sense of personality...permanently. Those willingly subjecting themselves to the experiment usually climb in for 15 mins and often feel they have been inside for days, even weeks. It can, with the susceptible, prove to be the worst ordeal they have ever undergone and, remember, these are volunteers, not patients forced into the cabinets against their will. On the upside, many folk enjoy the experience and a 15 min session doesn't come cheap. Horses for courses...

Plenty of reason, then, for the crew or their associates to tear out the pages. Maybe that's why the entire crew was disposed of, in case they blabbed. I can't shake off the feeling that the crew were involved in something illegal and Julio was just an innocent participant. I'd also have liked some kind of closure on the child's fate to conclude one aspect of the story.
