Hislop is right. We need to know what these people are being paid for, so we can look back at what they did earlier. E.G. after the last Balkan war, Douglas Hurd (ex Foreign Secretary) and the lady who ran the Foreign Office with him were paid handsomely to advise on privatising public utilities in Serbia. That surely was not their area of professional competence. Conflicts of interest are clearer when people are employed IN the same field as their previous work: generals and admirals who retire to work for an arms company selling to their old colleagues in the Ministry of Defence, or Treasury officials and ministers who switch to advising businessmen how to get round the regulations they may have helped write. Gamekeepers turned poachers!
