  1.  @Zardoz4441  Nothing is "built to last forever" now. Buildings may be designed for a life of 50 years or less. Those that are still standing are "over-engineered," like old cars that still run.

  2. When the bridge was built over the houses, I presume they lost value, making it difficult for the owners to sell and buy somewhere safer. Was there compensation, or were they just assured they were safe?

  5. Part of the problem with modern building materials must be that we have not yet had hundreds or thousands of years of trial and error to get them right. Like the inflammable wall coverings in London.
