When Sinn Féin won a majority of Irish seats in the House of Commons, they did not go to Westminster to pledge allegiance: instead they set up the first Dáil, illegally, in Dublin. When Westminster set up separate Northern and Southern Irish parliaments, the new SF MPs all formed the second Dáil Éireann, again illegally. The new British parliament of Southern Ireland (in Dublin) sat for part of a day with three MPs before it closed for ever.
The SNP already has the vast majority of Scottish seats at Westminster, but they did not campaign for immediate independence. If they do that, either at a national or at a Scottish election, that will be as good as an "advisory" referendum. It won't be "legal," but freedom will have been taken, not given.
There will still be a United Kingdom of Southern Britain and Northern Ireland, but they'll have to take the blue out of the Union Jack.
