Nor was anybody asked if they wanted to be in the British Empire and to send their taxes to London. Those people's ancestors paid for the infrastructure of Britain and much of Western Europe. If they want a return on that investment, they have to come here.

@paxundpeace9970 Thatcher made it almost impossible for councils to use the money to build new council housing.

If Jack the Ripper's crime was to steal valuable objects from all over the world and stash them in his home town, then his victims' descendants should be entitled to recover them.

You remind us that armed robbers form the elite in British prisons, and are looked up to by impressionable young shoplifters. When the East India Company gave up general trading in the 1780's, it was because most of their dividend came from taxation: i.e. the brave extortion of ordinary people by armed men. The second largest contribution came from the opium trade, which involved compelling farmers to grow the stuff, sometimes at a loss, and exporting it mainly to China, against that country's laws. That's more like what the less elite guests of His Majesty have done. They may swank about being "Made Men," but we know what they are.

Expatriates don't come to look at stolen artefacts, but rather to make use of the equally stolen infrastructure.

Do you even know what that word means? What I see here from the Nazis is emotion. They think they are losing their country to outsiders. News flash - it's not just their country, and hasn't been for centuries.

More of London belongs to the Crown Estate and the Duke of Westminster than to anyone else. At one time the tower blocks would have belonged to the local borough councils, but since privatisation, who knows? Housing Associations, probably. When town councils got into the housing business, their tenants came from the old slums and were more WASP than average. Africans and Asians used to be crammed by their landlords into what had once been spacious upper middle class houses before the owners fled to the suburbs. Now all that has changed and there may be LESS residential segregation than there used to be. Non-Londoners don't understand that.

No major political party dares to burst the housing bubble, because those who have already paid through the nose to buy don't want prices to come down. Investors are pushing up house prices and therefore also rent. A large proportion of MPs are in the "buy for rent" racket themselves, so they'll make sure landlords won't lose out.

There won't be any prosecutions for the Grenfell Tower fire until 2026. Meanwhile, the Tory councillors who were responsible for the cost-cutting and therefore the use of unsafe materials have been re-elected. Only the fire chief took any blame and resigned..
