Sapiens and Neandertahls coexisted around 20.000 to 25.000 years.
Surely, in this period, the comunities that had contact one with another, adopted all kind of behaviours.
In some cases they probably avoided the other, coexisted "peacfully", traded, merged in a group, fighted, scared the other away, prayed or even exterminated the other tribe(s) they met, depending on the circumstances.
Probably even, the descendants of a group that opted for one type of behaviour, adopted another, if, the met another group of neanedrtahl/sapiens hunderts or thousend years later......
I can perfectly imagine a sapiens group asking their neandertahl neighbours, with whom they had established peacfully relationships over the generations, for help when threatened by another, new and agressive, sapiens group......
