@timbrook7810 In Spain we are condemed for the "conquista". I think it si not about feeleng guilty, but if you are proud of the achievments your people made through history, and you celebrate their gloriuos moments (like your constitution, for example) you have also be aware of the less nice moments of the people who where there before you (althoug it is important to examine it in the historic context of that time). Slavery was an institution for thousends of years, you where not the first, and not the last to use it. And the conquista was just the usual " I go to your land and kill people, until the survivers accept that now I am in charge" that has been going on throug several milenia, too. The carthigian, roman, germanic, and islamic people did it to us (and the french tried later, but failed) . When we thougt we where strong enough, we did it to other people. Just the usual stuff...nice? Nop! Normal for that time? Yes indeed......

The first crusaders where probably actually a bunch of barbaric slaughters......they where the result of societys surged from 2 or 300 years of dark-age culture, when force, was the only law, and only the most ruthless suceeded. Imagine the type of person you would find after several centuries of a mad-max-like enviroment.....not nice, don´t you think? And then, the church took the biggest troublemakers from all this "nice" people, gave them a new purpose, indoctrinated them, ah, and told them basically that the inhabitants of that region where not really like human beings (and not that "being a human" would have stopped the kind of crusader that probably conformed the mayority of the first crusaders).
I am not surprised that they commit atrocities in their conquests, I am surprised they didn`t made more, and that they left anybody alive!
The next crusaders where probably totally another thing, at least because, throwing the worst elements of western lands over the islamic states, had allowed the institutions (like the church) and people remaining in Europe, to improve, and develope a more advanced society (for medieval standarts). So they just commited the "normal" atrocities in war times........

There is a diference. Although japanese comand had no problem getting rid of as many people as necesary, ALL of them, if they deemed it to be, they were also prepared to integrate the conquered people willing to get rid of their own culture and embrace the japanese one.........as a subservant underclass, true, but if they obeyed with fanatism their new masters, and were lucky, they had a chanche.
Under Adolfs rule, if you had the wrong ancestors, you were done. No matter how pro-Adolf you might be and how much you supported him, you were sooner or later going to serve as feritilizer, together with all your family........
