It is probably ment to terrorize the civil population ( "if you keep fighting we will throw our vicious syrians over you") so they ask their army to surrender or to leave the city and fight elswhere. If they were going to use massive infantery-assaults, they would probably ask the iranians to borrow them the revolutionary guard ...... in exchange for five launchable A-bombs, perhaps, ready for plug-and-use. And not that I want to give Putin (or the ayatola) any ideas, but I hope somebody is already working to avoid such a scenario (or some similar)......probably the israelies......
