Sheriffs department here in central Wisconsin uses Optima and has had high failure rates after only a few years in their detective and squad vehicles. I would never buy an Optima.

I very much doubt that “oil was not reaching the valve train”. What was likely ticking was a carboned/stuck lifter. That was a common issue before the 1990’s on high mileage engines. Any kind of high detergent additive is likely to work to loosen the carbon. I knew a man that used marvel mystery oil for the same issue and it worked great. Another interesting fact is you are using synthetic oil, which itself will loosen carbon deposits and varnish. We had to bring our used oil filters in and cut them open for Airframe and Powerplant training. One guy had a high mileage 80’s Chevy. He had changed to Mobil 1 from conventional oil on the oil change before the diagnostic cutting and the filter was so jammed with carbon, he could hardly slide the metal oil filter body off the element. He collected a quart size bag of carbon from that filter.
