I was married 25 years. I filed Pro Se. We had 3 real estate holdings, both had 401k and IRA's, net worth in millions. I think it cost me about $150 to file the paperwork and get the divorce. She didn't want anything to do with the real estate (she always looked at rentals as a burden and the value of our real estate fell so much 2008-2015, I bought out her equity at the lows) If I was to advise men on timing their divorce, do it in an economic downturn, especially a housing downturn. I agree about the honeypot, the very first thing divorce lawyers want to know is: what does the couple do for jobs, what are their assets and liabilities, then they lay the guys body on a morticians table, slice his carotid artery and drain him...all the while surfing the web for their next boat.

My daughter filed for divorce from her bum over a year ago. He has ZERO money, no 401k, no steady job. So no third party has an incentive to get the divorce done, he fails to pay any kind of child support for his 2 young children. He brought the entire family to it's knees financially persuing MMA. He sucked at MMA, he tried running his own gyms by signing 5 year commercial leases (and getting my daughter to personally sign, which I had advised her NEVER to do). When he defaulted on the leases, he and my daughter were personally sued for the remaining lease payments. He racked up almost $300k of defaults. Now she is having a hell of a time getting rid of this leech, even through divorce.
