This has been the most helpful 4Runner review for me. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and knowledge to the world.

4Runner is leading the longest lasting (by miles) and highest resale value vehicles in a statistical study by iseecars, an automotive research firm that analyzes millions of cars sold every year.

I hear that a redesigned NextGen 4Runner might come out for 2023 model! I’m guessing there will be turbo/GDI/hybrid technologies. It sounds reasonable for new designs to have some bugs that needs to be ironed out in the next few years. In your experience, how many years does it usually take for ironing out the new design bugs? Thanks!

@TheCarCareNut That’s definitely impressive by Toyota. Thank you!

Personally I hate the look of Jeeps. I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

Hi brother! Happy Saturday. I came across this video about engine noises in new 4Runners. Could this be just an outlier or a normal one? Thank you! https://youtu.be/4Ux667qwtGo

@TheCarCareNut I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts on this.

@TheCarCareNut Somebody asked about that noise again today and he says they didn’t build them correctly without stating the facts. This is annoying when people make comments like “they didn’t build em right” or “they don’t make em like they used to” and don’t give the actual facts. Thanks AMD, you are a breath of fresh air for the Toyota world. https://youtu.be/b50tHG-0YcA

Hi brother, while the 4Runners look rugged, strong and well built, I see that Highlanders have better NHTSA and IIHS crash test ratings when compared to the 4Runners. Any thoughts on what could cause that? Thank you.

@wretewr-m8c LOL 😂

Hi Brother! Loved your live chat today. Thank you for your compassion and love. What are your thoughts on Land Cruisers? I see that they cost twice that of 4Runners but look almost the same.

Hi Brother! I think now I know why 4Runner repeatedly gets shot in the IIHS crash test. As you so rightly mentioned, it’s a 2010’s design being carried over and over. The driver side frontal small overlap crash test is where 4Runners notoriously fail. IIHS introduced that test in 2012 to replicate what happens when the front left corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object like a tree or utility pole. Can’t fault Toyota engineers on a 2010 design for a crash test introduced in 2012. I’m sure Toyota will correct this with stronger reinforcement in the next gen 4Runner as they did with Highlander and Sienna and won the prestigious top safety pick plus award for 2021.

@TheCarCareNut Makes sense! It’s also a good a PR move to move higher up in consumer reports ranking. In 2014.5 Camry, did Toyota add a beefier front end? Curious how they correct these issues. I suspect these fixes are expensive as they have to destroy cars by crashing them in the tests or use advanced computer simulations.

Even after hearing the words - awesome, bulletproof, extremely reliable and best truck ever? Go figure.
2
No machine is trouble free! The question is the % of trouble, which is far far less in a Toyota 4Runner. That’s why manufactures have a warranty period.
2
@allincamo Yes, I had a 2005 SR5 and loved that to death. Unfortunately it got totaled after I got t-boned back in 2019 by a bum who missed a red light. 4Runner saved my life and I would get another one in a heartbeat if gas prices don’t shoot up.
2
@TheCarCareNut Well said! I especially hated how consumer reports has ranked the 4Runner in the bottom for SUVs. It’s sad that they are after the fancy features and have no idea what’s under the hood. They need to watch this video.
2
@TheCarCareNut First of all, CONGRATULATIONS for reaching 1M views. Woohoo! That makes sense. I will lookup TNGA. I’ve heard of it but never delved into it!
2
@TheCarCareNut That’s awesome! Thanks!

@TheCarCareNut While looking up TNGA, I bumped into an article on how body-on-frame constructions being so rigid, can transfer more energy to the vehicle occupants during a crash. Whereas the unibody vehicles can crumple more and dissipate the energy better before it reaches the occupants during a crash. Fascinating. Sounds like there are a lot of variables in a crash test!

@TheCarCareNut Happy new year brother! For 2021 models, Highlander, Sienna and Camry have been categorized on the IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus vehicles. This is great news. It would be nice to see the ultra dependable 4Runners join that category. It’s a truck, so hard to expect that! Lab tests aside. When we look at the real world deaths per million registered vehicles stats, Highlanders and 4Runners are running neck and neck with each other with very few deaths, proving that big and heavy vehicles are safer in a crash. I lost a friend last year due to severe head injuries after getting T-boned by a Chevy Silverado at 60 mph. He was on a Honda Civic NHTSA five star rated car and it took the brunt of the collision. The family (including the baby) in Silverado survived with minor injuries!
2
@TheCarCareNut Thanks! With the proliferation of fancy instrument clusters and smart phone usage while driving, it feels better to wear a helmet. Sounds crazy, but atleast one can feel like a race car driver lol
2
Hi Ron, any reason why you love the 4Runner over a Highlander?
1
@boomerrangerron Great! Thanks.

.....and the worst part is it is ultra reliable, yeah too bad.

Hi Brother! Rumor is out in some 4Runner forums that the 2022 next gen 4Runners will get a new 6 speed automatic transmission. I’m guessing it will be the same one from the current gen V6 Tacomas. How good are these 6 speeds for 4WDs in Tacomas from your experience? Atleast the fuel efficiency should get better I think. Not sure about the reliability. Thanks!

@TheCarCareNut That’s awesome. Thanks!

For 2020, 4Runner, Tacoma and Tundra are in KBB’s top 10 list for highest resale values. The car journalists complain in their reviews about outdated technologies and gizmos, but the resale value says it all!
