The modern image of the cowboy with the stetson hat, vest, and colt single action army is an image invented by Hollywood. Actual Cowboys wore bowler hats and much different attire. European settlers knew about ranching from Europe. The kernel of truth in old west Hollywood films comes from the stories of Jesse James, Wild Bill, and Wyatt Earp. Ranch owners in Mexico were 100% ethnically Spanish and their culture merged with American culture to create the cowboy. Once again, "Cowboy" is an American word. When people think of Cowboys they don't think solely of guys in sombreros lassoing cattle.
