I actually have to disagree with this While Ukraine is putting out a lot of lessons, this was not one of them Over reliance on drones will bite them in the ass

@Qwiv That would be incorrect The KA-52 and Mi-28 are vastly inferior to the Apache and Cobra Thanks to lessons from Iraq and Afghan , The US upgraded both to compensate for the very situation in Ukraine where Russian forces are getting their ass handed to them Not mention , Russia has no MQ-9 style UCAV for Persistent Close Air Support (PCAS)

@Qwiv Your gander would be incorrect Its not matter of jamming drones its over reliance You are so reliant on this one asset , that it becomes a single point of failure Jamming is one problem ,Hacking is another problem ,limited payload , range and sensor payloads , again more problems The some of those apply the helos but the design of the FARA would have addressed a lot of short comings with current helo design They had much more stream line and efficient design

@Qwiv The limitation of the Apache are range, sensor ,speed ,time on stations and weapons A prospective AH-64F would need the same retrackable gear as the 360 to improve speed Retain the longbow radar but upgraded with AESA but also a new mount similar to the Osiris system and Mast Mounted Sight on OH-58 An Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS) allow for long range passive tracking of targets And yes upgrade comms over reliance on drones and letting manned capability degrade only ends badly

@Qwiv Wrong You can't defeat MANPADs if you let them see you, Like fixed wing aircraft , you defeat them by denying a target hence why the Army is pushing for ATGMs able to be carried by helos but with range similar to what fixed wing aircraft can carry The UK Brimstone and Israeli Spike NLOS give Helos the range to engage targets without ever getting range The only SHORAD that outranges them is the Russian Buk-M3 at 43 miles and Chinese HQ-6 at 37 miles You are also forgetting that in Ukraine, MANPADs have also brought down fixed aircraft well Secondly your statement about the US testing stealth against MANPADS is moot Ukraine has provided the US looks at Russian defenses both SHORAD and MANPADs in use as well captured units. As China only copies, their tech is not much better In a peer to peer, engagement things very very different

@Qwiv In Iraq and Afghan , Apaches and Cobra took heavy losses because they were doing the exactly what Russian KA-52s and Mi-28s are doing Getting up close to where the enemy can engage them The Apache was upgraded to be able receive real time video from UAVs .allowing them see areas without having to get up close or unmask Secondly the Hellfire was upgraded with new warhead for engaging personnel and other soft targets as well GPS autopilot allowing them missiles to act like JDAMs Russian forces have yet to display anything like that , the best they have done so far is a few LMUR missiles but they have too few aircraft to use them Lastly, the Apache's latest addition is the JAGM and Spike NLOS The JAGM has been tested to 9 miles which is well outside MANPAD range and the Spike NLOS up 20 miles which outside of the range of MANPAD and even some SHORADs And yes thanks to Ukraine, the Army does want missile able to engage SHORADs Panstir, Tunguska, Tor Buk missile system

Well the GE T901 wasnt wasted thankfully The smart thing to which the Army isnt good at would take the Bell 360 and repurpose the design for a replacement for the AH-64 and the S-97 as replacement for the MH-6

@Qwiv Its combat, lives will always be at stake regardless. The scope is having options not only one option. The counter UAS , there are several systems in development First the Epirus' Leonidas high-power microwave (HPM) array mounted on which is designed counter drone swarming weapons. The system is currently mounted on IFVs Second USMC Ground-Based Air Defense which is 3 parts Marine Air Defense Integrated System (MADIS) is JTKV with 30mm cannon and 4 tube Stinger, MK-2 is L-Marine Air Defense Integrated System (MADIS) which radar/jammer on MRZR Lastly, the Medium-Range Intercept Capability (MRIC) which basically a mobile variant of the Israeli Iron dome And thats just the US There is massive push for counter-UAS weapons So yes, that is over reliance Secondly there are no other options The Amy dumped OH-58s in favor drones however in a contest airspace , drones would have problems operating effectively and the Apaches dont have the sensor payloads for recon Drones in Ukraine is highlighting the limits of Russian SHORADs They were designed to go after TLAM, F-16s , F-15s ,gunships and much larger UAVs Ukraine has few aircraft ,few cruise missiles and even fewer gunships so Russian defenses are facing threats they were not designed to handle The TB2 enjoyed success initially till Russian defenses got their act to together and that was that for it Ukraine itself, is using Flakpanzer Gepard to great effect against drones and loitering muntions Germany has developed the Skyrange 30 and 35 which are modernized Gepards but unlike the Gepard has both hard kill and soft for counter UAS

@zaco-km3su That would be incorrect The design just needs a few subtle tweaks Change the cannon to 30mm. Bring over the Arrowhead TADS/PVS and lastly a new mast mounting sight with AESA/IR/EOTS combined The GE T901 already produces more power than the T-700 The last hurdle would be redesigning the stores management They should look at enclosed weapons pod (EWP) which produces less drag
