@justsomemainer1384 There was single engine aircraft on carriers ,however the USN was trying to get away from them as engine technology was not as mature as it is today During that time, engine were notoriously under powered and unreliable. Even the F-14s initial engines were problematic The F-35 is different because engine technology is very reliable now

The lack of the BVR on the F-16 was the fact that Block 30 plus aircraft had started production and the USAF was transition.
